Authentic Indian Eats at Saffron
It’s hard to find proper Indian cuisine in town that meets my standards, but I’ve found a place I ABSOLUTELY LOVE! Saffron boasts authentic Indian food as well as Nepalese dishes to create fabulous options everyone will love. They offer certified gluten free and vegetarian options, too! The recipes are authentic in nature, but the “fusion” comes out in their fun and lengthy menu.
We started out with one of my favourite things – gobi (cauliflower) manchurian. It’s lightly battered and cooked in a rich sweet and spicy tomato sauce topped with green onions. It might look simple and unimpressive but it was one of the best things I had! We also ordered the Kathmandu kothey momo’s which are Nepalese style pan fried chicken pot stickers. Not only were they super tasty but my nickname is Momo so it was extra special!
I know an Indian spot is legit when they have a tandoor oven. They have several menu items under the tandoor section, and I had to go with my childhood favourite – roasted chicken! The ginger + garlic spices make it extra tasty plus that tandoor oven taste can’t be beat.
For our main entrees we ordered garlic naan, saag paneer, achari lamb curry, raita (yogurt with shredded cucumber and carrots) and Basmati rice. It’s hard to explain how insanely delicious everything was, so I’ll just say it was one of the best Indian meals I’ve had in Austin. They KNOW what they’re doing. I’m still dreaming about that saag paneer…
Last but not least was their matcha creme brûlée. It was perfectly sweet + had a great texture. Love love love! Saffron is such a gem of a restaurant and I’m so happy this true-to-home restaurant is in town.
