The Gluten Free Guide to Austin
I’ve been gluten free off and on for years and have been living in Austin for 10 years soooo I know a thing or two about where to get the BEST gluten free things in town. It can sometimes feel overwhelming trying to figure out where to go to get good gluten free eats, so I’ve made this guide to make things easier.
Gluten free is not just a fad – some of us have health conditions, some of us like the ingredients better, and some of us don’t have to give a reason. Whatever reason you choose to be gluten free for, no need to fret, because I’ve got you covered. Because some of Austin’s best food is actually *gluten free* 🙂
**Not all restaurants listed have a completely gluten free kitchen. Always inform your server if you have a medical condition and ask your server if there’s cross contamination.**
- Lucky Robot
Not only is Lucky Robot so pretty inside, but they’re so nice about making modifications – when I was on my Hashimoto’s Protocol, they made sure everything was free of sugar, gluten, dairy, and soy! They use tamari instead of soy sauce for a gluten free option (they have bottles of them that you can ask for). I love their veggiepillar roll, chef’s choice nigiri, chirashi bot, brussels sprouts, and tacuyaki just to name a few. - Vic and Al’s
Cajun food that’s gluten free?! Yes, it’s possible (and oh so delicious) I recommend the blackened catfish with sassafras rice, red beans and rice, beet salad and bean fritters!
- Hat Creek Burger
Gluten free buns and gluten free tots and gluten free fried pickles!!! YUMMERS.
- Old Thousand
Salt and pepper tofu is an amazing menu item and it happens to completely gluten free! Also love the Buddha’s Delight, fried chicken, and green beans.
- OP Italian
Yes, you can have amazing Italian food and it be gluten free! I recommend the charcuterie board, the filet mignon with potatoes, and the East Coast oysters.
- Fat Dragon
This is one of the best Chinese spots in town and they are super helpful with making modifications! I recommend the crystal dumplings, mapo tofu, seaweed salad, and ramen with sweet potato glass noodles.
- Revelry Blvd
I love everything from here and they have a ton of gluten free options including the chicken wings, gluten free bread for sandwiches (I’m partial to the lox breakfast sandwich and the blackened fish sandwich), and sweet and spicy brussels sprouts! - Malibu Poke
Some of the best quality poke in town can be found here and you can build your own bowl using their handy dandy nutrition sheet with all the allergies listed for each ingredient!
- It’s Italian Cucina
This might be the best gluten free pasta I’ve had in town – they import their gluten free penne pasta from Italy! Pictured is the pasta served with bolognese and a heavy helping of parmesan and it’s so so so delicious. I also love their risotto.
- Modern Market
This casual spot has lots of options for healthy eats including this beautiful buddha bowl.
- District Kitchen on Anderson
Their menu changes seasonally but the scallop ceviche, halibut with canneloni puree, and mussels are among my faves!
- Fresa’s
Almost everything is gluten free on the menu but I particularly love the El Santo taco, grilled sweet potatoes with poblano ranch, and the grilled vegetables with cauliflower, carrots, onions and cabbage!! - Usta Kebabgy
I recommend getting the chicken and lamb kabobs, saffron rice, and hummus – the flavors are incredible! - Andiamo
The menu changes seasonally but the prosciutto wrapped melon, seafood risotto, zucchini noodle pasta, and house made ice cream are amazing! - Flower Child
They’re great with accommodating all types of diets – I love their grain bowls (specifically the forbidden rice bowl with tofu) and the Thai cashew quinoa bowl with tofu and chili glazed sweet potatoes! - Rosewood
The menu changes seasonally but the polenta with braised pork and cheesy hashbrowns with brisket are incredible.
- Nate’s Baked Goods
This huge cinnamon roll is gluten free and amazing! I love the frittata with pimento and bacon, too.
- The Kebab Shop
This is a new addition to the food scene and I’m so in love with them! The chicken kebab is incredibly flavorful and paired with the saffron rice, Greek salad, and a drizzle of the garlic yogurt, it’s the perfect meal!
- Pueblo Viejo
Handmade gluten free corn tortillas with the most delicious, flavorful fillings. Can’t get enough of this place to be honest!
- Max’s Wine Dive
Fried chicken that’s gluten free and actually good. What else do you need to know?!
- De Nada Cantina
To say I’m obsessed is an absolute understatement – this place is consistently amazing! The whole menu is gluten free. Don’t forget the frozen margs too.
- Forthright Cafe
This healthy spot offers lots of gluten free options – some of my faves include the harvest bowl and avocado toast, and mushroom toast! - Via 313
One of the absolute best gluten free pizzas in town is at Via 313. I get the ambassador bridge every time! - Micklethwait
The frito pie is my go to, but all their meats are gluten free and their gluten free sides are amaaazing (the potato salad, cheesy grits and baked beans). - Cyclone Anayas
Some of the best tex mex in town can be found here – their Mexican rice is NOT gluten free but you can sub for a side of grilled veggies which are seriously delicious (or get this big plate of nachos and call it a day).
- Sway
Most of their menu is gluten free and I’ve eaten several menu items – I’ve liked every single thing I’ve had! Some of my faves include the shrimp pad thai, peanut curry, and the papaya salad with lump crab. - Kerbey Lane
They’ve come a long way since my college days. Kerbey offers tons of modifications for all sorts of diets including vegan, gluten free, dairy free and paleo. I like their mid-east feast, cheeseburger on gluten free bread, and of course their famous queso!
- Pelons
This downtown tex mex spot is beautiful and so delicious! I love the chicken flautas, shrimp tacos, chicken and steak fajitas, and the street corn. - Chilantro
I’m kind of obsessed with this place. I order the sweet potato glass noodle bowl about once a week. They have a full list of their allergens for each ingredient!
- Epic Poke
Delicious poke with a twist – you can get it with sweet potato noodles (just like the one’s at Chilantro).
- TLC
This South Lamar seafood spot is serving up amazing eats with lots of gluten free options! I’d be happy with a big tray of boiled seafood but they have gluten free bread options for their sandwiches too.
I know there are a lot more gluten free restaurants in town, but these are some of my fave! If you have something you think I should add, please let me know – I’d love to hear from you 🙂
