Authentic Spanish Tapas at Barlata

Published by Monique on

I tried Barlata for the first time a few weeks ago and I can’t believe it took me so long to visit! The space is beautiful, the food is flavorful and the service was wonderful. You might be able to guess what my favourite menu items were…

This drink was a perfect summer sipper – Sol Hibisco. Ford’s gin, Fruit Lab hibiscus liqueur, Grand Poppy liqueur, mint, thyme and lemon. Yummmm!

To start, we had the patatas bravas, Catalan flatbread with smoked salmon, and yellowtail jack crudo. The sauce on the potatoes was SO good I could literally put it on everything. The salmon flatbread was delicious especially with all of the pickled onions, and the crudo was the perfect summer treat! My fave of the three would have to be the crudo… it comes with a grapefruit and pear escabeche plus dressed with microgreens. Beautiful, isn’t it?

These were so tasty, but I wanted more of that salmon because it was just SO tender and delicious!

I could eat these alllll daaaaay, everyday.

You know I had to get the empanadas … these golden beauties were filled with lamb ragout and served with a mint green chutney – so perfect!

I almost always have to order brisket if it’s on the menu, cue the brisket stuffed canelones with rich bechamel sauce and manchego gratin. Cheesy, meaty, and just perfect!

The drink below is the gin and tonic with fresh anise, clove, fennel seed, lemon and cinnamon added to it for extra flavor and makes a beautiful glass!

I’m a HUGE fan of fideo and paella, so I was excited to order this squid ink dish. I was a little disappointed with how crispy and salty the noodles were, and I was hoping for more protein, but the allioli and shrimp were really tasty!

As my dad used to say, there’s always room for dessert. We ordered the house made chocolate ice cream and the manchego cheesecake with fig jam. The perfect way to end the delicious evening!

Barlata has an awesome happy hour that’s available Sunday – Thursday from 5 – 7pm (and all day Monday) with $4 sangria, $7 paella and LOTS more! It’s one of the largest happy hour menus in town and it’s a great way to try many of their delicious menu items.
